SALVATION Proclaimers Ministries Ltd, headed by Nigerian-born Tobi Adegboyega, above, is back in the news after its was shut down in 2022 by the High Court because of financial mismanagement and lack of transparency in its operations.
Among allegation made against the church, known as SPAC Nation, were that it coerced members to commit benefit fraud.
It’s now reported that the Charity Commission has disqualified four of its trustees.
The evangelical church was set up in 2012.
A Charity Commission report published earlier this month revealed the regulator had disqualified three trustees — Krystle Sarkodie, Mabinty Sesay and Adedapo Adegboyega for 12 years each — and former trustee Ebo Dougan for ten years.
In December 2019, the regulator opened an inquiry into the charity after it identified “serious financial, governance and safeguarding concerns”.
Before December 2019 the charity received “significant” cash donations from its congregation.
SPAC Nation’s accounts show that for the financial year ending December, 31, 2018 it collected £980,761 in “‘”tithes and offerings”’” and for the financial year ending December 31, 2019 it collected £718,761.
One major cause of concern was that the charity’s income and spending didn’t feature in a any bank account.
The Insolvency Service applied for a petition for a public interest winding-up order against the charity in January 2022 which the High Court accepted.
It June this year it was reported that Adegboyega is known for his extravagant lifestyle, including a £2.5 million mansion in Surrey and expensive cars, jewelry, and clothing.
Writing for Marie Claire, Chiama Dike said:
Despite the controversies surrounding him, Adegboyega continues to be a prominent figure in the Nigerian religious community, with videos of his sermons and interviews circulating online. This highlights the need for critical thinking and discernment when it comes to the leaders we choose to follow and the messages they convey.
