MURPHY’S despicable views have sparked a complaint to the Charity Commission by the UK’s National Secular Society (NSS) which alleges that a trustee of the Emmanuel Free Church of England Morcambe was promoting “vicious homophobia and sowing social division” in his sermons.

The church, registered charity, says on its website that:

So many churches today are backsliding into false teaching, but our church stands apart from the wickedness of our age by holding fast to the faith once delivered to the saints.

How does it do that? By allowing bigots and far-right lunatics like Murphy to promote antisemitism, anti-Muslim hostility, and homophobia.

In a sermon at the church on August 2, charity Murphy, above, claimed that modern Judaism contains “demonic cults” which “practice black magic and teach vile and reprehensible blasphemies so disgusting I will not even repeat them aloud”.

He said these “evil beliefs” should be “refuted along with every other false belief and false religion”.

Murphy added that Judaism is a “false antichrist religion” and quoted US Christian nationalist pastor Doug Wilson as saying:

When the Jews are bad, they’re very, very bad.

Wilson wants the US to become a Christian theocracy and seeks to repeal the nineteenth amendment to the US constitution, which enshrines women’s right to vote.

Murphy claimed that:

Some Jews doing very evil things in the world today. Epstein files prove that. George Soros is a living example of that . We should expose these workers of darkness for what they are, the servants of Satan.

The church is due to host a ‘Make Great Britain Christian Again’ conference later this month. One of the speakers, Cei Dewar, spoke at Tommy Robinon’s ‘Unite The Kingdom’ rally last year.

Regarding Islam Murphy said:

We need to stop these hordes of heathen Muhammadans coming into our country. Of course we do. We’re being invaded by an army of heathens who want to kill us. Islam is a demonic false religion from the pits of unholy hell and feminism is cancer.

He says he is a “Christian nationalist”, adding he’d “absolutely” vote for Rupert Lowe’s fascist Restore party.

Charity Commission guidance states:

Charities must never stray into party politics — they must never promote, or be seen to promote, a political party or candidate.

Speaking about immigration, Murphy said:

We’re talking about hundreds of millions of Hindus, of Sikhs, and particularly Muslims, who worship pagan gods, who are antithetical to
our western Christianity.

He also an enemy of LGBTQ+ people, saying “We need to end “homosexual adoption”.

He describes gay couples as “sodomite unions” and encourages them to “repent and turn away from their wickedness”.

The NSS has complained about other charities spreading hatred

The NSS has repeatedly raised concerns about religious charities promoting division, including homophobia, misogyny, antisemitism and anti-Muslim hostility.

Most recently it referred Hounslow Jamia Masjid and Islamic Centre to the Charity Commission for a sermon which said LGBTQ+ people have an “agenda” to “destroy the human race” and condoned the state execution of gay people.

The charity also hosted a speaker who has called for the death of Jews. In May, the NSS reported Bread of Life Community Church after its pastor claimed Muslims were trying to “eradicate the native population” and compared “perverted pride parades” to “Islamic jihad”.

In March, the Government announced plans to grant the Charity Commission additional powers to shut down charities promoting extremism.

NSS spokesperson Alejandro Sanchez said:

Once again we see a trustee of a charity registered under ‘the advancement of religion’ promoting vicious homophobia and sowing social division. Mr Murphy is entitled to his repugnant views, but they should not be subsidised at taxpayer expense.

It is now all too clear that religious fundamentalism is running riot in the charity sector. There has been no sense of urgency from the Government in addressing this. At time when social cohesion is already fraying in the UK, that nonchalant approach must end now.

There is still an assumption in the charity system that advancing religion is inherently beneficial. But by promoting homophobic or divisive views rooted in scripture, some charities are indeed ‘advancing religion’ — at least as they interpret it.

That is why ‘the advancement of religion’ must be removed as a charitable purpose. The many religious charities which do offer a genuine public benefit can continue to do so under separate charitable purposes.
