A TEN-FOOT tall statue of Poseidon rising out of the sea in the Gulf of Mexico just off the town of Progreso, Yucatan, proved a a real crowd-pleaser after it was erected in May, boosting local tourism.

No-one anticipated the row the ensuing row.

An outfit called the Indigenous Strategic Litigation group, according to this report, filed a lawsuit claiming that:

Poseidon is a Greek god who is alien to our Maya culture.

Following the lawsuit, Mexican authorities slapped a symbolic “closure” order on Poseidon, saying that it had been erected without permission from the Environmental Protection Agency.

But group spokesperson Carlos Morales wants its complete removal.

I want Poseidon removed from the beach at Progreso because it is foreign to the Maya culture, and because it did not meet the requirements of getting an environmental permits

Critics of the statue cite a series of recent storms in and around the Gulf—Tropical Storm Alberto in June and, more recently, Hurricane Beryl—as proof that the Mayan god Chaac, above, a fanged, hook-nosed rain deity is pissed off over the appearance of a rival.

Defenders of Poseidon insist that it’s good for business. Lizeth Alvarado Juárez, 28, an employee at a hotel in Progreso said:

It’s an attraction for our town and it draws attention. There are people who come from Merida (the state capital) just to see the Poseidon.

Concerns about the threat to Mayan culture are overblown, she said, noting that “the culture is doing fine.”

  1. The Greek sea god must look offensive to the Mayan god who demanded child sacrifices to ensure that the sun rose each day; it is debateable as to whether the recent storm and hurricane is due to Poseidon or because they are not slaughtering enough children.

So we have one non existent god getting pissed off with another non existent god and causing real storms as a sign of anger. Meanwhile, decent, hard working people are losing income as a result. When religion becomes involved, except in areas where many “believe” but don’t take it seriously people suffer.

The U.S. government estimates the total population at 129 million (midyear 2022). According to the 2020 Mexican government census (the most recent), approximately 78 percent of the population identifies as Roman Catholic (compared with 83 percent in 2010); 10 percent as Protestant or evangelical Protestant; and 1.5 percent as other religious groups, including Judaism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Church of Jesus Christ), and Islam. More than 2.5 percent of the population report practicing a religion not otherwise specified (compared with more than 2 percent in 2010), and 8.1 percent report not practicing any religion (compared with 5 percent in 2010). Some Indigenous persons practice syncretic religious traditions, including blending Catholicism with Indigenous beliefs.

Or it might be a spoof by a Mexican equivalent to the Satanic Temple.
