A TEN-FOOT tall statue of Poseidon rising out of the sea in the Gulf of Mexico just off the town of Progreso, Yucatan, proved a a real crowd-pleaser after it was erected in May, boosting local tourism.
No-one anticipated the row the ensuing row.
An outfit called the Indigenous Strategic Litigation group, according to this report, filed a lawsuit claiming that:
Poseidon is a Greek god who is alien to our Maya culture.
Following the lawsuit, Mexican authorities slapped a symbolic “closure” order on Poseidon, saying that it had been erected without permission from the Environmental Protection Agency.
But group spokesperson Carlos Morales wants its complete removal.
I want Poseidon removed from the beach at Progreso because it is foreign to the Maya culture, and because it did not meet the requirements of getting an environmental permits
Critics of the statue cite a series of recent storms in and around the Gulf—Tropical Storm Alberto in June and, more recently, Hurricane Beryl—as proof that the Mayan god Chaac, above, a fanged, hook-nosed rain deity is pissed off over the appearance of a rival.
Defenders of Poseidon insist that it’s good for business. Lizeth Alvarado Juárez, 28, an employee at a hotel in Progreso said:
It’s an attraction for our town and it draws attention. There are people who come from Merida (the state capital) just to see the Poseidon.
Concerns about the threat to Mayan culture are overblown, she said, noting that “the culture is doing fine.”
