ISLAM has more dumb rules than a procupine has fleas, and those charged with the task of deciding what is permissible (halal) or forbidden (haram) within the “religion of peace” are now having get their heads around the “problem” of nail polish.

The issue, in a nutshell, is that the overwhelming number of lacquers are non-permeable, and prevent water from reaching the nails. This invalidates the ritual of washing, or wudu/whudu, performed before prayer, and thus renders both the ritual and prayers themselves “null and void.”

The “null and void” claim comes from a Quora thread specifcally about men wearing nail polish. They can’t. That’s because it’s regarded as “effeminate”, a trait deeply frowned upon in Islam.

Most recently, Religion News Service reported that those charged with the certification of halal products are in a quandary over nail polish, as some companies are claiming to offer lacquers that are permeable, but in fact are not.

It quoted Imam Mansoor Rafiq Umar, CEO and President of Halal Watch World, a halal certification body, as saying that labeling a nail polish as halal “is a tricky and complex process.”

It’s very difficult for any company to claim that something can permeate it. I would love to see all the scientific data and papers to be able to show that.

I think the categorization is actually problematic. You can’t deem something as halal if you can’t make wudu with it. That’s not really a proper classification.

In 30 years of business, Halal Watch World only certified one nail polish brand as halal. For now, the company refuses to grant wudu-friendly certificates, claiming that existing water permeability tests aren’t convincing enough.

However, at least two companies have been granted halal compliant nail lacquers by other agencies.

One is Tuesday in Love, founded by scientist and physician Umar Dar, above. His website claims his:

Water permeable formula is the only one of its kind that allows water to pass through the nail polish unassisted. That means no rubbing, or added pressure for permeability.

You can perform your wudhu normally and not have to worry about the water reaching your nails. Our patented technology is proudly certified by ISNA Canada for ingredients and functionality. So you can pray with confidence.

Dar said he thinks the halal certification industry should agree on new standards for halal nail polish.

When it comes to the halal certification industry, there is very little to no central and authoritative organization.

The other is Maya which offers “breathable” nail lacquers.

Of the many problems faced by people on this rapidly deteriorating planet of ours, it beggars belief that something as trivial as nail polish and its effect on prayer would warrant any attention at all. But there was never a time when religion did not make up unbeliievable stupid rules to make folk fearful about their life choices.
