THE section of people in American society most likely to be highly engaged in political action are not evangelicals, as we’ve been led to believe. They are in fact atheists, according to political scientist Ryan Burge, above.
Burge’s May article, based on findings by the Cooperative Election Study, was seized upon today (Thursday) by The Christian Post which suggested that the era of atheist activism presents Christians with “a unique opportunity.”
Whenever an atheist expresses a passion for justice, they are making a tacit admission that there must be more to life than what their worldview allows.
We can remind them that the human dignity upon which they insist is rooted in Christian convictions about the imago Dei.
We can offer an explanation for the presence of evil in the world, not as an illusion or fabrication or mere inconvenience, but as a real aspect of life after the fall.
Nice try, CP, but the reality is that you cannot “offer an explanation for the presence of evil in the world” without resorting to the sort biblical mumbo-jumbo that atheists rightly reject.
My take on the issue of evil is simple: shit happens!
And much of that shit is predicated on what the late Christopher Hitchen’s described as “clerical barbarism“, something which truly engaged atheists have the power to challenge by using their growing numbers to bring about a more rational approach to life, the universe and everything.
This is not wishful thinking. The process has began, and is fast gaining momentum:
Burge wrote:
The data is clear and unequivocal on this point—no one gets involved in the political process to the level of the average atheist … The average atheist is about 65% more politically engaged than the average American.
He added:
Let me put it plainly: atheists are the most politically active group in American politics today and the Democrats (and some Republicans) ignore them at their own peril.
