A TRAINING programme titled “Leadership Lessons of the Lord Jesus Christ” at an unnamed US military unit was stopped in its tracks after a group of basic recruits said “fuck this for a game of soldiers.”
The group, comprising 112 personnel and a senior non-commissioned officer (NCO) who represented them, lodged a complaint with the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF)—and the programme was immediately halted, according to The Daily Kos.
When confronted by the senior NCO—who happens to be Jewish—the Officer in Charge (OIC) who concocted the programme made the preposterous claim it was not religious. It would “only focus on Jesus the military leader.”
Stretching truth to breaking point, the OIC further said that he chose Jesus as the subject for training:
Because Jesus is respected as a model of Godly leadership by all worldwide even if you’re not yet a Christian.
Writing for the Daily Kos, Chris Rodda said:
NOT YET a Christian? Apparently, this proselytizing officer expects those service members who are NOT YET Christian to BECOME Christian. But that’s not surprising considering that this OIC belongs to Cadence International, one of the large fundamentalist Christian parachurch organizations found on every military base.
Cadence, wrote Rodda is “dedicated to reaching the military communities of the United States and of the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ,” and the OIC, with his “Leadership Lessons of the Lord Jesus Christ,” was presumably trying to do his bit to fulfill Cadence’s convert-the-military mission.
The senior NCO’s conversation with the OIC ended with the OIC telling them, “if you or the other objectors didn’t like it you can complain to my chain of command.”

The objectors went further than that. They approached the MMRF, led by Mikey Weinstein, above.
Wieinstein contacted the OIC’s chain of command, and the programme was immediately halted.
The unnamed senior NCO, a member of the MMRF and a Christian, said in his initial complaint to Weinstein:
The OIC told the senior NCO that there ‘was absolutely nothing religious’ about the planned mandatory training as it would ‘only focus on Jesus the military leader’ and not ‘Jesus the Son of God’.
Delighted at the outcome of the MMRF’s intervention, the senior NCO said:
On behalf of all military personnel involved in this matter we want to thank Mikey and the MRFF for the quick, forceful and successful intervention with our senior military chain of command in this matter to stop this unconstitutional event from ever happening.
In 2013 the US The Defense Department said that proselytising—trying to get someone to change faiths—is banned. Its statement does not define proselytising or address the role of military chaplains. It also does not rule out court martial for those whose share their faith too aggressively.
Note: The image used to illustrate this piece caused a bit of a furore back in 2021 after a right-wing website, Newsbusters, complained:
The liberal fever dream of disarming lawful gun owners came through in Season Three of Netflix’s Paradise P.D. Along with attacking gun rights, it was also blasphemous against Christianity, featuring a video of a gun-wielding Jesus that turns into a porno.
For the record, I reported on the Paradise P. D. story for The Freethinker before it was disastrously rebranded last year and I was sacked. At the time the FT was getting around 5,000 visitors a day. Now it gets 5,000 A MONTH because followers deserted it in droves.
Over the last three months, freethinker.co.uk’s global ranking has decreased from 1,285,771 to 5,259,188—a shocking 309 percent decrease in traffic—and a sure indication of its abject failure to engage with readers with its pathetic content.
