‘It’s blasphemous!’ Christian university students in York furious over gay Jesus and Three Wise Men drag queens

Tonight, Thursday, St John’s University in York is due to stage a a nativity play featuring drag queens performing as the Three Wise Men, much to the disgust of some Jesus-afflicted students.

“A Gay in The Manger” is the Yuletide brainchild of the LGBTQ network at the university, and also features a gay Jesus, Mary and her wife “Jo”.

Some humourphobic students, according to this LBC report, aren’t seeing the funny side, with Josiah Diamond, 21, writing to the university to suggest Christians are being discriminated against.

The second-year politics and international relations student pointed out that a play about Muslims called “A Gay in Mecca” would not be tolerated on campus.

The University’s student union refused to be drawn on the comparison and insisted there was “no differential treatment of religious groups.”

In a letter seen by the Telegraph, Mr Diamond told the University:

This portrayal is not only blasphemous in a direct sense, but of a particular offensive and violating nature to adherents of the faith and openly opposing doctrine. By allowing this performance to go ahead, the university is supportive of groups who chose to openly mock the Bible.

He added:

There cannot be a distinction between religious groups and between the rights and privileges of differing religious groups. We are amazed that York St John supports such an approach. I am certain that you would not allow Muslims at the university to be so treated. I believe that you are discriminating against Christians.

Oh, do grow up, you silly little twat!

Student union chief Donna Smith said the University was:

Committed to being an inclusive environment that respects and supports people of all faiths and none. The planned performance has been given consideration of its script and context. I have found no evidence that the event constitutes unlawful harassment, discrimination, or hate speech under UK law.

She added:

I believe there will be no use of threatening, abusive words or behaviour intended to stir up religious hatred. I believe this to be a reinterpretation of a religious theme which is protected under artistic expression.

  1. The defence of a Christian view never seems to be settled by debate: exchange of facts, reference to historical events. Nor is there an acceptance by Christians that they have learned something and changed their minds. Opinions are fixed and often based on biblical impossibilities.

Barry: glad to hear that it was your computer that was the problem and not you.

    1. As someone who produced dozens of nativity plays as a teacher and a Sunday School leader, that title ‘A Gay in a Manger’ made me LOL! As I slowly deconverted, I began to want to put on a less cute, less sanitised version of the story. Like having those mothers whose babies had been slaughtered by Herod, come to a filthy stable, bloodstained and grief stricken, and confront the happy couple. And where was Joseph whilst Mary was in labour – in the Inn with blokes having a laugh and a jar or two?…..etc…..etc….etc. If I could, I’d now do the same, as this uni, put in some gayness…..! Why not?
