AN outfit called the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (Gafcon) is spitting tacks after it was announced that Dame Sarah Mullally, above, is to the next Archbishop of Canterbury.

In an angry post on on its website, Gafcon said:

This appointment abandons global Anglicans, as the Church of England has chosen a leader who will further divide an already split Communion … Though there are some who will welcome the decision to appoint Bishop Mullally as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, the majority of the Anglican Communion still believes that the Bible requires a male-only episcopacy. Therefore, her appointment will make it impossible for the Archbishop of Canterbury to serve as a focus of unity within the Communion.

It went on to say:

When she was consecrated in 2015, she took an oath to ‘banish and drive away all strange and erroneous doctrine contrary to God’s Word.’ And yet, far from banishing such doctrine, Bishop Mullally has repeatedly promoted unbiblical and revisionist teachings regarding marriage and sexual morality.

Gafcon blathered on:

In 2023, when asked by a reporter whether sexual intimacy in a same-sex relationship is sinful, she said that some such relationships could, in fact, be blessed. She also voted in favour of introducing blessings of same-sex marriage into the Church of England. Since the newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury has failed to guard the faith and is complicit in introducing practices and beliefs that violate both the ‘plain and canonical sense’ of Scripture and ‘the Church’s historic and consensual’ interpretation of it (Jerusalem Statement), she cannot provide leadership to the Anglican Communion. The leadership of the Anglican Communion will pass to those who uphold the truth of the gospel and the authority of Scripture in all areas of life.

According to the BBC, in a statement the Most Reverend Dr Laurent Mbanda, above, the Archbishop of Rwanda and chairman of Gafcon’s leadership council, argued that “the majority of the Anglican Communion still believes that the Bible requires a male-only episcopacy”.

However, The Church of Southern Africacalled the appointment “historic” and said “we heartily welcome the announcement”.

  1. Has Mbanda commented on the appointment of a female archbishop of the Church in Wales.) She replaces the disgraced and useless Andrew (call-me-Andy-it- sounds-cooler) John. She has a longstanding female partner and was pictured arriving at her cathedral on her first day on a motorbike. When cool-Andy was my bishop when I was a believer, our very active female lay-readers were in a same-sex partnership. I go to a cathedral next week to visit my relative, a priest there. The guy over her also lives openly in the cathedral close with a man!. I guess all I’m saying is that the CofE has always prided itself on being a broad church and that lumbeing old elephant ain’t evergonna change. As a vicar told me, you don’t just sit on the fence if you’re CofE, you can nail your colours firmly to it!

  2. My greatest hope is that this appointment will be the final nail in the coffin of the Church of Equivocators.

  3. How can society hope to gain stability and balance with millions still insisting, without evidence, that they believe in, and talk to, a non existent being. Further, they ask this fictional being for favours and protection.
