Christian morality crusader faces a jail term for possessing child porn

LATER this year Jason Yates, above, former leader My Faith Votes, an outfit that urges American Christians to vote for conservative values, has pleaded guilty to two of eight felony counts of possessing images of children aged between five and seven.

Now get this: Minneapolis-based Yates, while CEO of MFV, had a prior conviction and is a registered predatory offender. That conviction, also related to child sexual abuse material, “had been expunged for reasons that are not apparent,” according to The Friendly Atheist, Hermant Mehta.

While still head of MFV, Yates wrote an op-ed for The Washington Times, in which he claimed children were “being programmed to believe sexually deviant behaviour”, and wrote:

It’s time we stood united, as people of God, letting our faith fill the void in America. I hope you will join us as we work to restore Christian values to schools, to communities, and to the halls of Congress and the White House. United we stand, as people of God.

The Roys Report revealed in 2025 that MVX did not respond to previous questions from about whether the organization knew about Yates’ past conviction when it appointed him CEO.

But it did issue a statement to MinistryWatch, which sidestepped the issue of Yates conviction. Instead it said:

In early August 2024, the My Faith Votes board of directors separated Jason Yates from My Faith Votes and board member Chris Sadler assumed the position of Acting CEO. Over the last three months Chris has been working with the dedicated My Faith Votes team to encourage millions of Christians to vote, pray and think biblically about this election in America.

Court documents, according to Mehta, revealed a devastating story about how the pervert’s penchant for child porn was discovered.

A relative was in Yates’ home office looking for a way to store some files. That person came across a portable hard drive in Yates’ dresser and plugged it into their computer… only to realise it contained over 100 “sexually explicit images of children.” After speaking to a trusted friend, that hard drive was turned over to law enforcement.

At the time, Yates was forbidden from having any contact with anyone under the age of 18.

Mehta points out that MFV, while non-partisan, pushed a conservative agenda, claiming that:

Secular progressives have actively sought to implement a counterfeit worldview at every level of government.

It blamed those secular progressives for “devastating moral decay” and “the erosion of traditional family values.”

According to a legal filing, Yates agreed to plead guilty to two counts of “Possession of Pornographic Work Involving Minors – Under 14.” By doing that, the others six (identical) charges would be dismissed. That would allow him to spend a total of 240 days in jail —no more —with supervised probation for up to five years.

He would not be allowed to view any adult content online and software would be installed on his computer to make sure that doesn’t happen. He promised to undergo a “psychosexual evaluation.” He would also be a registered sex offender and forbidden from having contact with girls under the age of 14. Finally, he would pay a bond of $100,000.

If he didn’t take that plea deal, the 56-year-old Yates faced a possible prison sentence of up to 10 years.

A day after Yates filed his guilty plea, My Faith Votes published an article urging Christians to contact lawmakers to vote against the Equality Act, which they (falsely) claimed would “allow pedophiles to become a ‘protected class.’”

  1. Perverted behaviour is to be expected from people who immerse themselves in the immorality of their evil books.

    1. The first essential of the religious believer is not to think; not to analyse, and to be open to accepting the most impossible of explantions for beliefs. I think there are various levels of believers. There are the true nutters who accept the literal truth as fact for of the most appalling statements which cannot fit in modern society.

Then there are the “modern” believers who often appear on BBC religious programmes . As you listen you ask yourself :”How can he (or she) with their intelligence and qualifications possiblly believe this obvious nonsense?”

They don’t. Their situation, job perhaps, makes it important that they appear to believe. So they make the appropriate noises. That is my opinion.
