BRANDISHING a BIble in a YouTube video the 63-year old priest—Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, above—claimed the foul tome justified his marriage to a virgin.
He might have been referring to Leviticus 21:13-14:
And he shall take a wife in her virginity. A widow, or a divorced woman, or a woman who has been defiled, or a prostitute, these he shall not marry. But he shall take as his wife a virgin of his own people,
But, following expressions of outrage in the country, where the legal minimum age to get married is 18, it’s reported here that police in Ghana have today (Tuesday) launched an investigation into the union.
The wedding ceremony of the “high priest” was held on Saturday in Nungua near the capital, Accra.
The Ghana police said that the girl had been identified and located, and that she and her mother were ”currently under police protection,” according to a statement that said:
The Ghana Police Service is working with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and the Department of Social Welfare to provide her with the necessary support while the matter is being investigated.

Citizen Digital reports that, despite efforts to reduce it, child marriages continue to be a problem in Ghana. According to Girls Not Brides, a global NGO, a significant percentage of girls in Ghana marry before reaching adulthood, emphasising the importance of addressing this issue.
The outlet pointed out that critics have been vocal in their demand for the dissolution of the marriage and an extensive investigation into Tsuru’s actions.
However, leaders from the Nungua indigenous community, which includes both the bride and the priest, have defended the union, citing deeply entrenched traditions and customs.
Community leader Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II emphasised the significance of understanding the cultural context of the marriage. He has emphasised the long-standing traditions that govern such unions and assured that the girl’s education will not be jeopardised by her role as the priest’s wife.
Tsuru, known as a “Gborbu Wulomo,” or traditional high priest, wields significant spiritual authority in the Nungua indigenous community.
