THERE was loud applause, cheering, and a standing ovation at a joint session of both France’s lower and upper houses of parliament as most French lawmakers yesterday (Monday) celebrated the final approval needed to make the right to abortion an explicit protection in the country’s constitution.
But not sharing in the jubilation over the historic vote—780 in favour and 72 against—was the Roman Catholic Church.
Ahead of the vote, the Vatican repeated its opposition to abortion, according to Le Monde, which carried a statement from Rome which said:
The Pontifical Academy for Life recalls that in the era of universal human rights, there can be no ‘right’ to take a human life.
It was echoing concerns already raised by French Catholic bishops.
It appealed to “all governments and all religious traditions to do their best so that, in this phase of history, the protection of life becomes an absolute priority.” It added:
The particular life situations and difficult and tragic contexts of our time must be addressed on the basis of a law which seeks above all to protect the weakest and most vulnerable.
Ahead of the vote France’s Prime Minister Gabriel Attal noted that the right to abortion remained “in danger” and “at the mercy of decision makers.” He added:
I am telling women, within our borders and beyond: The era of a world of hope is starting.
Pope Francis, head of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics, has previously described abortion as “murder.”
Joy displayed was ‘demonic’
Meanwhile, far-right LifeSite News‘ correspondent in France, Jeanne Smit wrote that those delighted with the vote were:
Celebrating the symbolic victory of death over life, with a glee that can only be called demonic. One shudders to think of the consequences.
In Catholic eyes, this is surely a crime that cries out to Heaven for vengeance: the crime of killing the innocent which is now presented as a good, a freedom, a justified liberty, which deserves to be inked into the constitution as being somehow part of the French Republic’s identity card which lays the ground on which civil life is constructed.
