EVEN before Adam Greenway, above, became President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Texas in 2019, the school had an enormous deficit that worsened after $1.5-million was spent on renovations and decorations for his official residence on campus.
Religion News Service reports that Green, whose tenure lasted less than three years before he resigned last year, ran the seminary “without deference to financial controls and seminary financial policies.”
The $1.5 million included an espresso machine costing more than $11,000, some $60,000 for Christmas decorations and more than $25,000 for artwork.
Greenway was elected president in 2019, in the hope that he would help the school recover from the controversial tenure of former President Paige Patterson, who was fired in 2018 for mishandling abuse allegations.

According to the Washington Post Patterson, above, lied about his treatment of an alleged rape victim in 2003 and In 2015 he tried “break down” another woman who had reported a sexual assault.
Much of the overspending occurred during the tenure of Patterson, who was President of Southwestern from 2003 to 2018.
A June report from from trustees at the seminary does not detail any of the spending patterns during Patterson’s tenure. Instead, the report included a few select details about Greenway.
An overview of the seminary’s finances released on June 7 shows that Southwestern ran an average deficit of $6.67-million per year from 2002 to 2022.
During that time, the number of full-time Southern Baptist students at the school dropped by two-thirds (67 percent) while expenses went up by a third (35 percent).

Greenway has since been replaced by David S Dockery, above. Seminary chairman Danny Roberts said:
Dr. David Dockery is God’s man for Southwestern Seminary in this hour. Our seminary’s at a critical juncture in this 115-year history, and in God’s providence, He has already provided the man to lead our seminary during this time.
Roberts said trustees did not need to “look further for our next president.”
Unless, of course, the failing seminary sinks even deeper into the shit.
