CHURCHES are notorious for their inability to safeguard children and the vulnerable. Oh, and money, as a new report about the arrest of Sara Ann Mock-Butler, inset above, indicates.
The Colorado Springs woman, who was employed at Pikes Peak Christian Church, is accused of nicking about $350,000 in church funds to purchase items for her personal use. These include lingerie and even adult toys.
An arrest document claims that Mock-Butler stole the money throughout her unchecked or unsupervised tenure as finance director from 2017 to 2022, when she quit the post.
At the end of May, 2023, Mock-Butler presented herself at the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in response to an arrest warrant concerning 896 financial-related offenses.
It’s alleged that, from the start of March 2018, she began using increasingly significant amounts of the church’s cash annually.
To cover her tracks, she obliterated any record of her financial activities and falsified paperwork to make it look like her acquisitions were lawful.
Senior pastor, Ross Frisbee said that the congregation reacted “generously” to the loss of funds.
He expressed his gratitude to them for continuing to put their faith in the team of employees as they work toward improving the system of checks and balances going forward.
When asked what he would say to other churches wanting to learn from Pikes Peak Christian Church’s experience, Frisbie wrote:
Make sure you have a financial oversight team that sees not only the reports but the bank statements as well. Trust but verify.
