TIME and again we’re reminded that places of worship are the roosting places for perverts, and here’s further proof in a report about Jacob Ryan Barnett, inset above, a pastor at the Catawba Valley Baptist Church in Troutville, Virginia.

Barnet, 34, was arrested a few days ago for allegedly pretending to be a teenage boy online to lure young girls into having sexually explicit communications with him.

The FBI began investigating Barnett in May, after a Michigan mother reported she had discovered nude images and a video that her 15-year-old daughter had sent to a TikTok account, using the name Jodie Johnson. The FBI traced the social media account and phone number to Barnett.

Barnett told one girl he was 17 years old and sent her photos of a young male that he claimed was himself. Investigators could not identify the male in the photos, according to the complaint. Barnett asked the girl to send him nude photos, which she did, as well as a video.

In June, he messaged the 15-year-old that it was “time for her to see her first dick,” described how he would have sex with her, and told her how to masturbate.

During one call on May 20, Barnett messaged the girl while on the phone with his wife.

If convicted of a federal charge of attempted coercion and enticement of a child Barnett would face a mandatory minimum of ten years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison. He is set to make an initial appearance this week in the U.S. District court in Roanoke, Virginia.

Investigators also discovered Barnett had allegedly used Snapchat to contact other emale minors.

Barnett began working at Catawba Valley Baptist Church in April 2024, after serving as a pastor for five years at Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown, Virginia, according to an archived version of his biography. The biography no longer appears on the Catawba Valley Baptist Church website.

The archived version says:

Jake felt the call to ministry when he was in middle school. He has volunteered in children’s and youth ministry at each church he has attended. Jake loves teaching the next generation about the truths of the Bible and serving God’s people.

Oh, and apparently loves teaching teenage girls to masturbate.

Doug Echols, senior pastor at Bethel Baptist, said the church is alerting congregants of the arrest and encouraging them to report any concerns. He said he does not know if any of the girls in the church were among those Barnett allegedly contacted or followed on social media. He added:

We are shocked and saddened by these events and praying for those survivors that have been affected.

    This is ironic in view of the subject.

    Looking-up synonyms for ‘pastor’ in https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/pastor, it gave this as the first Example Sentence:-

    “Jill smiles through her husband’s verbal abuse, while her man of God turns a blind eye to his youth pastor’s predation on teen girls.”

    The world with its disasters, which I need not list, is going to hell and yet God never makes an appearance. Where is he and why is he not saving at least his Christians? According to some of them they are made in his image.

      As a commenter said on another atheist blog, if he saw any adult abusing a child, he’d do all he could to intervene, to stop it happening. Which makes him a better human being than the supposedly omnibenevolent loving heavenly father who does not a thing to end that child’s pain – let alone all the other suffering there is in the world.

    I don’t like to admit it with young grandchildren, but I think it is game over. Many prominent scientists, some who have signed documents to governments and got no effective response say they are in despair. The wrecking of the planet continues unabated. It is significantly helped by God, according to his supporters, deflecting a bullet from Trump. The bullet killed another man. Perhaps he wasn’t a Christian.

    Trump is running riot and has ended many global warming practices which were protecting the planet and loosed industries to exploit areas to take oil, etc to the benefit of billionaires. Heads of State seem more concerned with relative trivia than the issue of global warming. I think we would need very different politicians to make an impact and they are just not there.

    Despite the mounting evidence, including many deaths, that we are being killed, forced to breathe toxic air, accept polluted seas and rivers, and see entire species of animals become extinct by the day.

    The “solution” seems to be to look away, pretend it isn’t happening and believe that there isn’t really a serious problem. That is about all that our current politicians are capable of offering.

    We need high political values, imagination, passion, high intelligence, decisiveness, utter and unshakeable determination and creative thought. Where are they?
