AN image of Jesus created with grease on paper by Spanish sculptor Gonzalo Quesada, above, for Lent has come mired in controversy.

What the Spanish are calling the “fish wrap” poster, bears the Spanish word for Lent. It features some hazelnut shells and a beer bottletop, and was commissioned for a special service in Utrera, in Seville province, to mark the Christian month of fasting.

According to this report Quesada said:

It is a tribute to the ability to find Christ in every detail of our daily life, reminding us that He is always with us. Christ is present in the everyday moments of our lives, even in something as simple as a meal with friends.

This is the second time that an Easter poster has upset Catholics. Last year in Seville a poster of a “sexy” Jesus angered conservative Christians and the political right, who claimed it was homoerotic and inappropriate. Thousands of people signed a petition calling for it to be withdrawn.

At the time, Tony Wilson, of Premier Christianity, wrote:

The figure of Jesus, smooth chested and with a touch of muscle definition, is the on-trend look many men aspire to. That the painting has been described as ‘effeminate’ underlines that this is metrosexual manmade flesh.

The artist responsible — Salustiano García — defended his work, claiming that:

Those who see something dirty in the painting are only projecting their own internal dirt on to the image.

  1. That they squabble over a poster indicates how petty, insignificant and localised is the issue. Billions of stars in the Milky Way; trillions of galaxies, vast distances between them all created and ruled over by Jesus:God and they disagree about a poster.

Meanwhile Christianity is in charge in the disaster that is the USA. The newly appointed Defence Secretary – a genuine, hundred percent, ignorant Christian crazy- wants to base his policies (whatever they might be) on the Old Testament and executing homosexuals is one he has invented for himself. Their brand of Christianity is pitiless, lusts in causing suffering and whines about their virtues. They are destroying our environment while denying global warming.

Meanwhile PM, bishops, MPs and others who should be screaming with outrage are keeping very quiet. Why did so many of our military die fighting for our freedom. I had a relative in WW2 who died in the burning sea off the west coast of Scotland. Are he, and so many others, to have died often horribly for this country with so little protest from our supposed leaders.
