WHILE the ghastly Mary Whitehouse was waging war in the UK against LGBT+ communities, Byant was aping her antics in the US with her Save Our Children coalition. Their preferred tactic was to trumpet the alleged sinfulness of homosexuality and the imagined propensity of gays to recruit and molest children. Jerry Falwell lent support to the coalition.

According to Charisma News, which reported her death last week, Bryant had become prominent in Florida as a spokesperson for orange growers when she launched her successful effort to repeal a Miami-Dade County ordinance that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation. She later told Playboy:

I got involved only because they were asking for special privileges that violated the state law of Florida, not to mention God’s law.

Despite the campaign’s success, she subsequently lost her contract with the Florida Citrus Commission and reported a half-million dollar loss in concert bookings.

Her entry in RationalWiki says that, in response to her actions, homosexuals and their supporters boycotted Florida orange juice. She was also publicly pied by LGBT activist Thomas Lawrence Higgins on television; she instantly remarked, “At least it’s a fruit pie.”

She prayed for God to forgive the pie thrower. Her then-husband later threw a pie at Higgins in retaliation. No record of the flavour was ever made and she did not press charges against Higgins.

Pies appeared to be gay activists’ ‘weapon’ of choice against bigots like Bryant. When Whitehouse visited Australia in 1978 to promote her Nationwide Festival of Light, she was hit by “menstrual blood” pie thown by one of many protesters who objected to her presence in Brisbane.

When Bryant’s own granddaughter came out as gay in 2021, the bigot reportedly told her that homosexuality is a delusion invented by the devil and if she focused on loving God she would realise she was “straight”.

Here are a couple of this nasty Christian zealot’s quotes:

• If gays are granted rights, next we’ll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St Bernards and nail biters.
• As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children.
