TWENTY people have so far claimed they were sexually abused for ten years by a monk named Father Thaddeus Kotik, inset above, at the abbey and that no action was taken to stop the abuse.

According to the BBC, Kotik died in 1992 without facing any criminal charges into claims he abused children between 1977 and 1987 on the island located in Carmarthen Bay of the Bristol Channel.

A report commissioned by Caldey Abbey revealed that victims of child sexual abuse were treated in a heartless, hostile and cruel way by monks on the remote island.

The review said frequent allegations of abuse had been made but not followed up on or reported to police, and the lack of challenge had enabled a monk to abuse children over four decades “in plain sight”.

Caldey Abbey commissioned the report, and its new abbot apologised for the pain and suffering caused.

Father Jan Rossey, Abbot of Caldey Abbey, above, said in a statement

It is with deep sorrow and regret that I have read in the review of the great suffering of children who were abused by Father Thaddeus Kotik and the closed culture of secrecy and cover-up which kept this hidden.

It is clear opportunities were missed to stop the abuse of children. It is particularly heartbreaking to hear children spoke up to adults and no action was taken.

One of Kotik’s victims, “Jenny”, released a photo to the BBC of her being held by Kotik.

Rossey added:

Children and their families were failed when they should have been supported and listened to. The abuses should have been reported to the statutory authorities.

On behalf of the monastic community, I sincerely apologise to all those who have been hurt and have suffered because of the abuse of Thaddeus Kotik and past failures in not protecting children and their families. It is particularly odious when abuse is committed and hidden by people who are in positions of trust because of their monastic or priestly vocation.

Since becoming the new Abbot on Caldey Island in 2023 I have been determined to create a culture of openness and transparency. I want to take ownership and responsibility for past failings. I want to ensure we learn lessons from the mistakes in the past and create a safer environment for everyone.

It is for these reasons that I commissioned an independent review into historical claims of child abuse on the island …

In a later report the BBC quoted a victim — identified only as Rebecca — as saying the review had “done justice to her truth” and the abbot’s apology was better than nothing but had come too late.

Learning that the abuse went back as far as the 1960s makes me feel even more angry and upset, because how many times could they have done something about it? I don’t think they’re men of God. They never have been, they don’t answer to anyone. It’s hypocrisy in the worst way. They’re living a lie.

Report author Jan Pickles said the abbey had responded in a “heartless way” to victims who were “very vulnerable and very damaged” by what had happened “at the hands of a monk, part of its community”.

Off the hook. Serial evangelical abuser Jonathan Fletcher won’t stand trial.

IN 30 years as vicar of Emmanuel Church Wimbledon, London, the Rev. Jonathan Fletcher, above, is alleged to have engaged in naked beatings, nude swimming and massages, as well as other sexual misconduct, and bullying and “spiritual abuse.” Then, in July 2024 he was charged with eight counts of indecent assault and one of grievous…

    1. I’m a simple soul, am I right you’re suggesting some survivors of this abuse are making it up? Cos I’m old, and unless you are younger, it’s hard for you to understand how such things weren’t reported to authorities back in the 1960s. Had I told my (good, caring) mother of a sexual impropriety by an adult, she’d have accused me of lying. Authority figures, police, clergy, teachers etc would never do such a thing……I was wickedly telling a lie, I should be ashamed of myself. That’s how police, clergy, teachers etc got away with abuse back then. Adults were always right and kids were liable to tell fanciful tales. And also survivors – I know two – felt such shame, embarrassment and fear, they kept their abuse to themselves for years. I’m so glad my pre-teen g/kids know the correct anatomical names for their genitalia – we certainly never could use the p word or the v word, only doctors did and had I done so, my mum would probably have threatened to wash my mouth out with soap. So, zod forbid, if any adult touched my g/kids inapproriately they know exactly whom to report it to – and know that their allegations would be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

Yes Jenny, I am suggesting that some people are jumping on the compensation bandwagon. The other point that I was making, is that parents should not entrust their children to a bunch of liars and fantasists: I was not abused, but no thanks to my parents, they were not chapel goers and did not know those that looked after me in Sunday school until I was expelled aged eight.

What happened to the large number of children who were genuinely abused is absolutely atrocious, the abusers should have been put away for a long time and chemically castrated.

  2. Let me just chuck in another bit of human behaviour before I make my point. How does this fit in with what is being discovered by the thousands slaughtered, imprisoned in terrible conditions and tortured causing hellish agony by the fiendish Assad. The Christian insistence is that every human is precious to God above all other creatures.

Meanwhile Selby has legged it and is now skulking somewhere saying he is shouldering the blame for all the priest pedophiles. Shouldn’t he, or one of the other clerics be required to explain where this fits in with the precious humans insistence. We are a pest, a disease, wrecking the planet, driving other creatures extinct, using rivers to dump their shit in them to profit themselves.

Isn;t anyone to be held to account? Keir Starmer seems a non event when we need drastic action to begin to deal with global warming. There are many admirably people and I have met many. But they are not in government. As we know the USA has elected a thief, rapist, “global warming is hoax”, and such a liar that he cannot separate lies from truth.

We are animals and our evolution has been a disaster which is heading us for disaster.

    1. I agree, however Broga, I cannot ‘like’ because WordPress is temperamental like an ill-educated child. Will it allow me to post this or will it lose it? Must remember to copy!

It lost it and my password, set new one saved to Google and that got lost>

      Useless, useless, useless WordPress.

    1. There was a time when religious characters had a spiritual air around them. I met a very few and even a hard atheist such as myself could sense it. They didn’t have to be religious or with a particular denomination. They just, it seemed, instinctively lived like that. Some, I’m sure, were atheists.

In the past there was an expectation that vicars, priests, bishops had, at least, a touch of this. That expectation has gone. Welby and others like him are in the job in search of status, access to high ranking people, and fame from performing certain roles. They are frauds, sometimes paedophiles and well protected by those around them. Welby is also boring as he goes through the motions of what he thinks he is supposed to be.

He is also amazingly in the House of Lords. Why? What for? Unelected and unwanted and a drain on our taxes. I expected a Labour government would put an end to the Lords expensive, undemocratic racket. Welby uses the Lords to bleat his excuses and, like the other unelected members, interfere with legislation. This is a disgrace and still continues. With the ineffective PM we are unlikely to see a change anytime.

      1. … which is shocking when considering that the PM and over 50% of his MPs are non-religious and that Labour whipped for a no vote on the amendment to chuck out Welby and company.

Disgusting , this island is a charity that has been abusing children since for 50 years , no compensation for victims and as the review says they treat victims of abuse with hostility and cruelty . They are not holy men and they hide paedophiles on their island , its dangerous
