CONSERVATIVE Catholics are reacting with mounting horror over the way that Pope Francis is dealing with dissidents within the Catholic Church.
After reports surfaced that the Pope was intending to evict American Cardinal Raymond Burke, above, an outspoken critic, from his Vatican apartment and revoke his salary, far-right religious outlet, LifeSite, quoted the New Daily Compass‘s editor-in-chief Riccardo Cascioli as saying that the move was:
A serious and unprecedented measure, in defiance of every legal and ecclesial principle … The fact is that the end of this pontificate increasingly resembles in its methods, a South American dictatorship.

The move against Burke follows the recent sacking of Texas Bishop Joseph Strickland, above.
The National Catholic Reporter this week carried a piece that revealed that the Pope told a meeting of the heads of Vatican offices last week that he was moving against Burke, because he was a source of “disunity” in the church.
Francis said he was removing Burke’s privileges of having a subsidised Vatican apartment and salary as a retired cardinal because he was using the privileges against the church.
Burke, 75, had become one of the most outspoken critics of the Pope, his outreach to LGBTQ+ Catholics and his reform project to make the church more responsive to the needs of ordinary faithful.
Burke had always defended his actions as being of service to the church and the papacy, saying it was his obligation as a cardinal and bishop to uphold church teaching and correct errors.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Strickland expressed shock at reports that Francis was about to punish his fellow American.
If this is accurate it is an atrocity that must be opposed. If it is false information it needs to be corrected immediately.
Cue another Pope who posted this on X, formerly Twitter, earlier today:
